About

Deakin University has been on the journey of digital transformation for the past six years.

William Confalonieri, Chief Digital Officer of the institution has identified a number of ‘megatrends’ that are driving this transformation; trends he says will impact organisations in every industry.

“In my view, even though we are already seeing a great level of disruption, we haven't seen that much yet. There is going to be a higher level of disruption pushed by several drivers,” says Confalonieri.

These drivers include the changing nature and pace of technology as well as the shift into an era he calls the “digital customer-centric era”.

With an eye on these trends, Confalonieri has overseen a number of technological advances at the university, the most publicised of which is Deakin Genie, a digital personal assistant powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Deakin Genie has changed the lives of university students by simplifying the study experience but perhaps more importantly, Confalonieri says the technology is preparing them for an AI-powered future.

“Not too many years from now, most professions are going to work with some kind of a smart agent. We are going to be seeing a world where artificial intelligence and smart agents are everywhere,” he says.

“We are delivering a better present but we are also fast-forwarding them to the future so they will be prepared.”
