kevin-callahan

Kevin Callahan

Co-Founder & VP of Innovation Strategy, MapMyFitness (US)

Sydney - 15 May
Melbourne - 17 May

Kevin Callahan is the Co-Founder and VP of Innovation Strategy at MapMyFitness, Inc., a VC-backed health and fitness company based in Austin, TX.

First love came early for Kevin when he received his first computer, a Commodore VIC-20, in 1982. He spent hours learning how to program games in BASIC displaying an aptitude and passion for technology early. Kevin’s father was a State Department diplomat, so his family traversed the globe from the Philippines, Iraq and South Africa giving him a cosmopolitan outlook of the world from an early age. Though his backyard often changed and his computer was continuously undergoing upgrades, Kevin’s fascination with technology remained the same.

Graduating from high school in Swaziland, Africa, and a short-lived stint playing semi-professional basketball in Pretoria, South Africa, Kevin journeyed state-side to attend John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He spent his college days focused on his BS in Mechanical Engineering and exploring NASA labs continuing to foster his love of technology. Kevin was all set to join the ranks of rocket scientists until he discovered the new frontier of dot-coms and their glorious combination of entrepreneurship and exciting computer technology. Kevin launched his first company during his junior year of college. EZmeals.com was designed to make food deliveries to the always hungry college crowd, but more importantly, he was hooked.

Kevin’s love of the startup world took him to Boston, where he became employee #8 at Voter.com. Voter.com focused on political news and eventually ballooned into roughly 130 employees, raised $30M in outside funding. From Voter.com, Kevin helped develop a sales tool devoted to interactive marketing messages for companies like IBM and Dupont and a mobile software company for the talent industry. Soon Kevin left the Boston shore and its delicious chowder behind to head for the sunny skies of southern California. In San Diego he never quite grasped how to surf the waves, but he continued to sharpen his product and internet business acumen at a web and business consulting company and an seo/interactive marketing agency.

A lifelong athlete, Kevin had been running for years and wearing through countless pairs of running shoes, he finally participated in his first marathon in Hawaii during the Spring of 2005. While training for that race, Kevin developed an application that he named MapMyRun for tracking his runs and measuring his distance. At the urging of his running team, Kevin put his application online and MapMyRun.com was born. MapMyRun.com eventually evolved into MapMyFitness, Inc. and in 2010, the company received a series-A round of financing lead by Austin Ventures. [Insert Marketing Language here.] MapMyFitness is now headquartered in Austin, TX with offices in Denver, CO and Boston, MA and partners around the globe.

In addition to charting the course in the world of health and fitness technologies, self quantification, and big data, Kevin serves on the Board of Directors of RunningUSA and has been a guest lecturer on Entrepreneurship at Johns Hopkins University, has spoken at conferences on the impact of Technology and Event Race Planning and Participation, and has been involved in starting a number of local endeavors from run clubs to technology meetups. Kevin currently lives in Austin, Texas with his beautiful wife and adorable daughter.
