Board of Directors

The role of the ADMA Board of Directors is to represent the broad membership on issues affecting their operating environment. Directors are called upon to bring their extensive industry knowledge to the table and ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for members. This is distinct from Directors of public companies who represent the financial interests of shareholders.

The fulfill this role, the Directors are charged with remaining highly informed on developments impacting the Australian and international marketing landscape and continually seeking member feedback.

The Board evolves the strategic direction for the Association and sets broad parameters for its implementation.

    Jodie Sangster was appointed CEO on July 1, 2011 after relocating from the Direct Marketing Association in New York.

    Originally from the UK, Jodie worked with the UK Direct Marketing Association having responsibility for both UK and European regulatory affairs. She moved to Australia in 2001 as ADMA’s Director - Legal & Regulatory Affairs, playing a pivotal role in the development of key legislation such as the Spam Act, Do Not Call Register Act and APEC Privacy Principles.

    Jodie joined Acxiom as Chief Privacy and Compliance Officer and moved with them to the US in 2007 before joining the DMA in New York in 2009 as Senior Vice President of Education & Global Development.

    Head of Customer Relationship Marketing and Digital, Australian Financial Services

    Karen Ganschow has held senior marketing and sales roles across a range of Information Technology and Telecommunications organisations. She is currently the General Manager, Customer Relationship Marketing for Westpac.

    Karen has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and holds a Master in Business Administration. She is also a part-time lecturer in CRM and Consumer Behaviour at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management.

He is a regular contributor to industry thinking on marketing measurement and accountability, having held commercially successful programmes as both client and agency strategist.

    Tony is a Partner of leading customer analytics and marketing strategy firm Quantium.

     In this role, Mark is responsible for all marketing and communications activities across the organisation.

    Prior to his current position Mark was the Director of Marketing, Systems & Technology Group, IBM Asia Pacific based in Shanghai, China. In this role, Mark was responsible for marketing within the hardware division of IBM for all operations across the Asia Pacific geography.

    Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Sydney University and has earned a Diploma in Direct Marketing from the ADMA.

    Over the past 20 years, Phil has been at the forefront of marketing communications services (both agency and client side), building direct and digital marketing businesses that have become market leaders and innovators in their field.

    After starting his career client side in the financial services industry, Phil worked for a variety of agencies in Melbourne and Sydney. He was Managing Director of the direct and digital arms of Singleton Ogilvy & Mather Group, where he oversaw consistent growth, and was appointed to OgilvyOne’s Asia Pacific Regional Council and global management team.

    Phil is now Managing Director and Partner of Apparent, an independent start-up agency, where he is continuing his work in strategy-led customer management activities. An accredited speaker, facilitator and trainer, Phil lectures and runs programs on digital and direct marketing, strategic communications, leadership management, sales and customer service.

    Born and educated in the UK, Andy has over 20 year’s customer relationship marketing experience in London, Melbourne and Sydney.

    A lifelong direct marketer, Andy started his career in London as an Account Executive in a Soho-based DM agency. He has worked his way up through the ranks of the DM industry, including roles as Managing Director of Rapp Collins Sydney, M&C Saatchi and now Clemenger BBDO Sydney.

    He has worked on CRM programs for leading brands including Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Commonwealth Bank, Qantas Frequent Flyer and now Virgin Australia Velocity Rewards.

    Andy is an active member of the advertising community and is a past Chairman of ADMA.

    In 2003 he won the coveted ADMA Direct Marketer of the Year Award.

    Chantal joined Foxtel as Marketing Director in July 2011 after a short stint at News Limited as Director Marketing Strategy. Prior to this Chantal was Director Brand, Advertising, Relationship Marketing and Digital at Telstra where she worked on, amongst many things, reinvigorating the Telstra brand particularly amongst the 18 – 24 audience and launching the Next G network. Chantal was also responsible for the BigPond advertising and brand development as General Manager Marketing for many years. She has an honours degree in Economics and started her career in Advertising at Ogilvy & Mather in South Africa before moving to Canada where she held many high profile positions including Chief Marketing Officer Merrill Lynch HSBC.

    David Bowie was appointed Managing Director of SAS Australia and New Zealand in April 2012. David brings a hands-on leadership approach and is passionate about fostering a customer-driven culture throughout his expanding team.

    Joining the company in 2002, David has a 10 year record of SAS experience and achievement, previously as the Marketing and Services Director.  In his time at SAS, David has played a key role in driving the company’s strategic shift from a product-based model to one that is sector and solution-centric. He has also been instrumental in growing the awareness and understanding of SAS across Australia and New Zealand.  As Marketing Director, David was instrumental at anticipating the ‘future’. He inspired people around him with a clear vision of future market opportunities and of what SAS could be doing to deliver to how customers’ needs may evolve over time.

    On his leadership appointment, David announced a significant investment in strategic programs designed to sharpen the company’s focus on the customer. These initiatives provide customers with increased intelligence about emerging market needs and advice to ensure they gain the maximum advantage from their investment in SAS solutions.

    The transition to Bowie’s leadership coincides with the challenge of exponentially growing volumes of data from ever increasing sources. However, the industry focus has shifted beyond the hype of Big Data, with organisations now recognising that it’s about big analytics enabling real-time insights. With David’s focus on an integrated customer approach and harnessing the current market potential, his leadership is well positioned to take SAS forward in the region and drive profitable-growth by enabling the organisation to excel at delivering superior customer value.

    Prior to joining SAS, David held senior executive positions with Dimension Data, IBM and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

    Emily is the General Manager, Customer Engagement at Woolworths Limited responsible for loyalty, customer analytics and customer insight across the organisation. Prior to this, Emily was the Head of Everyday Rewards at Woolworths responsible for the strategic direction and operation of the Woolworths Everyday Rewards Program. She held this role for over 5 years and was involved with the program since its inception.

    Prior to joining Woolworths, Emily had more than 15 years experience in the retail industry and has held a number of corporate strategy, finance and marketing roles at Woolworths, David Jones and Sainsbury's Supermarkets in the UK.

    She holds an Honours degree in Economics, a Master of Business in Finance and Accounting and is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

    Lucinda leads Google's marketing efforts to bring Google products to Australian and NZ users and help more businesses grow online. Prior to this appointment, Lucinda was Head of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Google Australia and NZ. She brings 13 years experience working in Internet and mobile in Asia, the US and UK. Before joining Google, Lucinda was VP Marketing Communications for Symbian where she led a global team promoting smartphone technology. She has worked in two Internet start-ups and at BHP as a mission critical systems engineer. Lucinda holds Bachelors degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and an MBA from INSEAD. She returned to Sydney to teach her two children to body surf.

    Phil has worked in the telco industry for the last 14 years, 12 of those with Optus. Born in the UK, he initially trained as a Chartered Accountant, moved to Australia and joined the telco industry, working for Cable &Wireless plc. He moved to Optus in 1999 and joined their marketing team in 2002, becoming the Acquisition Manager for Consumer Plans.

    In 2008, he became the Marketing Director for Optus Small & Medium Business and has since driven the company’s B2B digital marketing and developed business grade products and services. Most recently he has been lifting the uptake of businesses using social media and online to drive lead generation.

    Phil is a strong leader who is passionate about team engagement. In addition to his work for Optus, Phil has mentored Year 10 students in the Australian Business and Community Network and sits on the AdviceBank programme run by Australian Business Arts Foundation.

    Executive General Manager - Parcel & Express Services

    Richard Umbers, an Executive General Manager at Australia Post, is responsible for the Parcels & Express Services Business Unit, and for the enterprise eCommerce program which is a major change initiative designed to position Australia Post as the natural partner of online shopping in Australia.

    Richard joined Australia Post in 2010 as Executive General Manager eServices, where he was responsible for developing Australia Post's digital offering and delivering new online initiatives to drive business growth.

    Richard has previously held a range of senior and General Management positions in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) retailing.  Prior to joining Australia Post, Richard held positions as General Manager Buying and Marketing, and General Manager Customer Engagement at supermarket retailer Woolworths in Australia.  Richard was also Managing Director of supermarket chain Progressive Enterprises Ltd in New Zealand, and Managing Director (North West UK and Republic of Ireland) for supermarket discounter Aldi.

    His strong international retailing experience gives him a great insight into supply chain management and he has a strong track record of developing new revenue and profit streams based on innovation and technology.

    Richard has an honours degree in Geology and Geography from Exeter University (UK), and a Masters in Finance from the University of Leicester (UK).  He also holds a non-executive board appointment at the Association for Data-driven Marketing & Advertising (ADMA).

    Rob is the Executive Manager responsible for commercial and marketing at Qantas Frequent Flyer. He is responsible for managing relationships with the partners and members of the Frequent Flyer program.

     Prior to joining Qantas Rob was a partner at Ernst & Young where he worked for ten years. He joined the firm in the financial services practice with responsibility for client development. He later went on to manage the business development function for Australia and New Zealand. Before joining Ernst & Young Rob spent eight years working in the wealth management industry, for NAB in Australia and Scottish Widows in the UK.

    Rob holds an honours degree in Business Studies and has an MBA (Executive) from the AGSM. He also holds the Advanced Financial planning certificate, awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute in the UK.

    With over 22 years of experience, Craig Wallis is a direct and database marketing practitioner, educator and solution provider. He brings a wealth of experience to the ADMA board having worked with TNT Global Express, Salmat, Australia Post and WPP Group.  For the last nine years, he has worked at Database Consultants Australia where he is the Business Development Manager.

    Throughout his career, Craig has been involved in the design, development and management of data-driven marketing solutions for a wide variety of local and international clients.

    Craig also gives generously of his time and experience to ADMA. He has served as an elected member of the Victorian ADMA Branch Committee (Secretary) and is a member of the association’s Data and Analytics Expert Group. He was also elected to the ADMA Data Council (Executive Committee).

    As the new Branch Chair for the ADMA State Branch Committee (Victoria), Craig will work to engage the Victorian and national marketing community through a variety of events and networking opportunities. He plans to drive the development of data-driven topics for the local branch through numerous channels including the ADMA Certificate Course and ADMA Data Day. He will also promote marketing guidance and support for new practitioners in Victoria.

    Craig is keen on ongoing education for both new and experienced marketers and will put considerable energy into providing the community with best practice tips and information.

    Craig has previously lectured in database marketing at RMIT School of Business and speaks regularly at the ADMA Certificate course in Melbourne on database marketing. He has also completed the ADMA Direct Marketing Certificate, ADMA Diploma and has a Diploma of Business in Marketing.

    Currently the Managing Director of Adelaide digital agency, Via Media, Jason has served on ADMA’s mobile marketing Expert Group, chairs the SA branch committee, tutors the Digital Certificate course and joined the board in February 2009.

    Previously Wendy spent 4 years as Head of Marketing for MBF Group, responsible for Health, Life & Travel Insurance, ClearView Retirement Business, & Group Corporate Services.

    She evolved the MBF Brand making it contemporary & proactive, to ensure it could encompass the company’s expanded brand/product portfolio. This not only achieved success in key brand measures, but had a significant impact on the organization’s growth.

    Prior to MBF, Wendy held Senior Marketing Roles at Telstra, across Consumer, Business & Government, with a focus on strategic marketing & loyalty.

    She was Ansett’s Gen. Mgr Sales & Marketing - Emerging Business for 3+ years, leading a Greenfield, & very successful, direct marketing business increasing annual revenue by + 130%. The marketing model she developed was adopted by airlines globally.

    Wendy’s marketing experience spans a variety of industries across all disciplines & covers 20+ years. Passionate about putting the customer at the centre of every marketing execution, she is known for ‘pushing the boundaries’ of marketing whilst consistently connecting with the heart & soul of the customer.
